Spotted
Cardona's Redstart is a rare and range-restricted warbler found in the Tepuis region of southern Venezuela. It's characterized by its dark head, yellow underparts, and reddish flanks.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Tepuis (table-top mountains) of southern Venezuela, particularly in humid montane forests and stunted woodland.
How to spot
Observation requires expedition to the isolated Tepui plateaus. Look in the dense, often stunted forests on the slopes and summits of these mountains. Like other redstarts, it's active and often forages by flicking its tail.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round within its specialized Tepui habitat. Early mornings are best for activity.
This species is named after Félix Cardona Puig, a Venezuelan explorer and naturalist, reflecting its discovery and unique habitat in the remote, flat-topped mountains known as Tepuis.
