The Rufous-winged Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized species, named for the rufous wash on its flight feathers, which is visible in flight. It is a resident of humid tropical forests.
Where to spot
Found in Central America, including Costa Rica and Panama. Inhabits humid lowland and foothill evergreen forests, often in the canopy and along forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its overall greenish plumage with a rufous wash on the wings. Males have a small red malar stripe. Listen for its soft, high-pitched calls and gentle drumming.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observed year-round. Mornings are often best for sightings and vocalizations.
