The Cream-colored Woodpecker is a distinctive species, named for its uniform creamy-yellow plumage. It is a resident of humid tropical forests and wetlands, often found near water.
Where to spot
Found in the Amazon basin of South America, including Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas. Inhabits lowland rainforests, swamp forests, and gallery forests.
How to spot
Look for its unique, uniform creamy-yellow plumage. Males have a red cheek patch. Listen for its loud, ringing calls and typical drumming, often on dead palms.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours, observable year-round. It is often conspicuous when foraging on dead palm trunks in open areas.
