A medium-sized, dark tapaculo with rufous undertail-coverts, representing a broadly distributed form in the Andes. It is a secretive resident of humid montane cloud forests.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane forests and cloud forests of the eastern slopes of the Andes, from southern Colombia south through Ecuador and into Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rolling or churring calls. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its range.
