Spotted
The Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, scientifically known as Cercotrichas galactotes, is a medium-sized passerine bird belonging to the Muscicapidae family. It is widely distributed across arid and semi-arid regions of North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia, known for its distinctive rufous tail and remarkable vocal abilities.
Where to spot
This species prefers dry, open habitats with scattered bushes, scrubland, semi-desert, wadis, oases, and cultivated areas. It is typically found close to the ground, often among low vegetation.
How to spot
Birdwatchers can spot this robin by observing its characteristic tail-flicking movements, where it often cocks and fans its rufous tail. It is also often located by its rich, varied song, which includes mimicry of other bird species, delivered from a prominent perch or low bush. Its call is a harsh churr.
When to spot
The Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin is most active during the early morning and late afternoon. During the breeding season, migratory populations arrive in spring and can be observed until late summer or early autumn before they depart for wintering grounds.
