A rather plain but distinctive cotinga species found in the humid montane forests of the Andes. Its plumage is uniformly rufous or reddish-brown, and it is primarily known for its loud vocalizations.

How to spot
Often detected by its loud, clear, rising and falling whistles ('wheeee-ooo'). Look for it perched upright in the mid-story to canopy of tall trees. Its uniform rufous color is the key field mark.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal and active in the early morning and late afternoon.
