Spotted
The Rufous-naped Greenlet is a small, distinctive Neotropical songbird, characterized by its rufous nape and olive-green plumage. It is an active insectivore, foraging methodically in the forest mid-story.
Where to spot
Found in the northern Andes of South America, including parts of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests.
How to spot
Look for its rufous nape. Listen for its characteristic, often repetitive, high-pitched calls and songs. Scan the mid-story and understory of montane forests, where it can be quite active.
When to spot
Active year-round in its resident tropical montane habitat. Most vocal during the breeding season. Best observed in the early morning.
The distinct rufous patch on its nape is a reliable field mark that helps differentiate this species from other greenlets in its range.
