Spotted
The Rufous Grasswren is a small, highly camouflaged grasswren known for its rufous plumage and secretive behavior. It inhabits rocky, arid landscapes of Australia.
Where to spot
Primarily found in spinifex-dominated rocky ranges and gorges across central Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
How to spot
Requires patience and careful scanning of spinifex and rocky outcrops. Listen for its soft, melodic calls, which can be the first clue to its presence, as it rarely flies when disturbed.
When to spot
Active year-round, but most vocal and observable during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning or late afternoon.
Its superb camouflage allows it to blend seamlessly with the reddish rocks and spinifex grasses of its harsh desert habitat, making it incredibly difficult to spot.
