Found in isolated, dense lignum and cane grass habitats along ephemeral watercourses in arid inland Queensland and New South Wales, Australia.
How to spot
Requires immense patience and a quiet approach. Scan the base of dense tussocks of grass or lignum, looking for rapid, mouse-like movements. Listen for its faint, high-pitched calls, which are often the first clue.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most easily observed in the early morning or late afternoon when foraging activity is typically higher.
