Spotted
The Striated Grassbird is a medium-sized, highly cryptic warbler-like bird, named for its heavily streaked plumage. It is a shy inhabitant of tall grasslands and marshy areas, often difficult to observe.
Where to spot
Widespread across parts of Asia and Australia, including India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea, and northern Australia. Inhabits tall grasslands, reedbeds, swampy areas, and cultivated fields.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often explosive, 'chew-chew-chew' or 'chop-chop-chop' song, often given from within dense cover. Look for brief glimpses as it climbs grass stems or flies short distances between clumps.
When to spot
Resident year-round in many areas, but some populations are migratory. Most vocal and visible during the breeding season (varies by region), when males sing from exposed perches.
Its finely streaked plumage provides excellent camouflage, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the dense vertical stalks of its grassland habitat.
