Spotted
A small, often inconspicuous antwren, the Rufous-backed Antwren is identifiable by its rufous-tinged back and its preference for the undergrowth of humid lowland forests. It moves stealthily through dense vegetation.
Where to spot
Humid lowland rainforests across the western Amazon Basin, including parts of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
How to spot
Search in the dense understory and lower levels of primary and mature secondary forests. Listen for its distinctive trilling or whistling calls, and look for small, quick movements among leaves.
When to spot
Present year-round. Dawn and early morning hours offer the best chances to hear its calls and observe its foraging.
