Spotted
The Ruddy Kingfisher is a magnificent species found across East Asia and Southeast Asia, named for its predominant ruddy-orange plumage. It also features iridescent blue on its back and wings, making it truly distinctive.
Where to spot
Breeds in Northeast Asia (Japan, Korea, China) and migrates to Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia) for winter. Also resident in parts of Southeast Asia. Inhabits coastal mangroves, forested streams, and estuaries.
How to spot
Look for its unmistakable ruddy plumage perched quietly in the dense foliage of mangroves or forest edges. Its loud, piercing call, a distinctive 'kyew-kyew', often gives away its presence.
When to spot
Best observed during migration periods (spring/autumn) or in its breeding/wintering grounds. Active during daylight hours, often at dawn and dusk.
