Spotted
Rouget's Rail (Rougetius rougetii) is an endemic rail species found in the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is a secretive bird, often found in dense, wet grasslands and moorlands.
Where to spot
High-altitude moorlands, bogs, and wet grasslands in the Ethiopian Highlands and parts of Eritrea, typically above 1,500 meters.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive calls, often described as a soft, rhythmic 'krr-krr-krr.' Look for movement in dense vegetation, particularly where grassy areas meet water. Patience and a quiet approach are vital.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings or late afternoons, especially during the breeding season when they are more vocal.
