Spotted
The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest and most widespread woodpecker in North America, identifiable by its black and white checkerboard pattern, white belly, and a red patch on the nape in males. It is a familiar backyard bird.
Where to spot
Widespread across most of North America, inhabiting deciduous and mixed forests, woodlands, parks, gardens, and suburban areas.
How to spot
Look for its tiny size and black and white pattern. Listen for its short, sharp 'pik' call and rapid, light drumming. It often forages on small branches and even weed stalks, making it easier to spot than larger woodpeckers.
When to spot
Resident year-round throughout its extensive range. Active during daylight hours, often a frequent visitor to bird feeders.
