Spotted
The Fire-bellied Woodpecker is a large and striking species of West Africa, named for the vivid red plumage on its underparts. Its back is predominantly olive-green, contrasting with its vibrant belly.
Where to spot
Inhabits tropical moist broadleaf forests, secondary growth, and forest clearings in West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Nigeria.
How to spot
Look for its large size and bright red belly as it forages on large tree trunks. Listen for its loud, characteristic calls and powerful drumming, which can often be heard from a distance in the forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its tropical habitat. Active during daylight hours, often more visible in the mornings when foraging activity is high.
This woodpecker is a primary excavator, creating nesting and roosting cavities that are subsequently used by many other species of birds and mammals in the West African forests.
