Spotted
The Robust Thornbill is a distinctive thornbill named for its relatively robust bill and streaked plumage. It inhabits the arid interior of Australia, adapted to harsh conditions.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid mallee, acacia scrub, and mulga woodlands across inland Western Australia, South Australia, and parts of Northern Territory.
How to spot
Look for its streaked plumage and slightly thicker bill. Listen for its quiet, high-pitched calls. Often seen foraging methodically in shrubs and small trees, carefully inspecting bark.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during the cooler parts of the day, as high temperatures can limit activity.
Its bill is noticeably stronger and thicker than other thornbills, allowing it to forage for insects on harder bark and in tougher, woody vegetation.
