The Red Myzomela is a small, brilliantly colored honeyeater found on the island of Halmahera. Males are almost entirely bright red, making them visually stunning.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Halmahera in the northern Moluccas, Indonesia. It inhabits primary and secondary lowland rainforests, often found in flowering trees at forest edges.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable with their almost entirely bright red body, contrasting with dark flight feathers and tail. Females are duller. Look for them actively feeding in flowering trees. Listen for their high-pitched, sibilant calls.
When to spot
Active throughout daylight hours, primarily feeding on nectar. It is a resident species, observable year-round within its restricted island habitat.
