Spotted
The Whiteman Myzomela is a recently described species of honeyeater, endemic to the Whiteman Mountains on the island of New Britain. It is a small, unassuming bird of montane forest.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Whiteman Mountains of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. It inhabits montane rainforests, typically at elevations between 1,000 and 1,700 meters above sea level.
How to spot
This is a small, rather plain myzomela, primarily olive-brown with a pale belly. Its identification relies on its restricted range and subtle plumage features, often seen moving through the mid-story and canopy. Listen for high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, foraging for nectar and insects. As a resident species within its specific montane habitat, it can be observed year-round, though access to its range is challenging.
This species was only formally described in 2014, highlighting the ongoing discovery of new bird species in remote and biodiverse regions like New Britain.
