Widespread across eastern and southern Africa, found in a variety of habitats including rocky areas, forests, farmlands, and urban environments.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black body and the striking flashes of rufous on its wings during flight. Listen for its loud, melodious, and varied calls. Often seen perched on rocks or buildings, where it is quite conspicuous.
When to spot
Active year-round, typically foraging throughout the day. Often seen at dawn and dusk around communal roosts.
This highly adaptable species has learned to exploit human settlements, often nesting on buildings and bridges and readily feeding on discarded food items.
