Spotted
An endemic Philippine species with a remarkably long, slender, and decurved bill, setting it apart from other rhabdornis. It inhabits montane forests.
Where to spot
Montane forests, typically at higher elevations, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines.
How to spot
Watch for its distinctive foraging behavior: creeping up tree trunks and branches, using its long bill to probe. Its larger size and prominent bill distinguish it from other rhabdornis species.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during foraging activity in daylight.
The exceptionally long, curved bill of the Long-billed Rhabdornis is specialized for probing deep into bromeliads, mosses, and bark crevices to extract insects and nectar.
