Spotted
The Standard-winged Nightjar is a spectacular African species, renowned for the two elongated primary feathers males display during the breeding season. These unique 'standards' can be twice the bird's body length.
Where to spot
Widespread across Sub-Saharan Africa, primarily in open woodlands, savannas, and grasslands, particularly during their breeding migration.
How to spot
Look for males performing display flights, often silhouetted against the sky, especially during breeding. During the day, they are well-camouflaged on the ground or perched low. Listen for their distinctive calls at night.
When to spot
Nocturnal, most active at dusk and dawn. Males with standards are best seen during the breeding season, which typically occurs from November to April, varying by region.

Only the male Standard-winged Nightjar grows the extraordinary feather 'standards' during the breeding season; these highly ornamental feathers are shed once breeding is complete.
