Spotted
Bonaparte's Nightjar is a rare and elusive species found in the lowland forests of Southeast Asia. Its cryptic plumage provides excellent camouflage against the forest floor and undergrowth, making it incredibly difficult to detect.
Where to spot
Restricted to parts of Southeast Asia, primarily on Sumatra and Borneo, inhabiting primary and secondary lowland rainforests, often near streams or rivers.
How to spot
Due to its rarity and dense forest habitat, observation is challenging. Listen intently for its distinct calls within its forest habitat. Spotlighting along forest trails or clearings at night may reveal individuals on the ground or low perches.
When to spot
Primarily nocturnal. Best sought during dusk, dawn, or after dark when it becomes active.
This nightjar is considered one of the least known Caprimulgus species, with limited documented sightings, making any encounter a truly special event for birdwatchers.
