Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, south of the Sahel, from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to South Africa. Inhabits open woodlands, savannas, and cultivated areas.

When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is prominent during the rainy season, when males are most colorful and vocal.
