The Rufous-backed Babbler is a medium-sized babbler found in the montane forests of Central Africa. It is characterized by its rufous-brown back and crown, contrasting with paler underparts and a pale eye.
Where to spot
Found in parts of Cameroon, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests, preferring the mid-story and undergrowth.
How to spot
Listen for its varied, often melodious, whistling or chattering calls. Look for movement in the dense foliage. Its rufous-brown back and pale eye are key identification features.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Observation can be challenging due to its preference for dense cover.
This species often forages in the mid-story of the forest, meticulously gleaning insects from leaves and small branches, sometimes joining mixed-species flocks.
