Spotted
The Red-backed Sierra Finch is a stout, finch-like bird. Males have a gray head and underparts with a contrasting reddish-brown back and rufous wing patches. Females are duller.
Where to spot
High-altitude puna grassland, rocky slopes, and Polylepis woodlands of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Look for it on the ground or low perches in open, high-altitude areas. The reddish back is the best identification mark.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the day, often foraging on the ground.
The rufous-red back is a prominent feature that gives this high-altitude species its common name and distinguishes it from other sierra finches.
