Spotted
The Pygmy Eagle is a small, forest-dwelling eagle endemic to New Guinea. It is similar to the Little Eagle of Australia but is considered a distinct species, adapted to New Guinea's unique montane forest environment.
Where to spot
Montane forests of New Guinea, typically at higher elevations, usually above 1,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for its relatively small size (for an eagle), dark upperparts, and pale, streaked underparts. Observe it soaring above the canopy or perching on tall, exposed trees, often at dawn or dusk.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Requires patient searching within its dense forest habitat, often around clearings.
Despite its 'pygmy' designation, it is a true eagle and an effective aerial predator in its habitat, feeding on birds and small mammals.
