Gurney's Eagle is a large, powerful raptor found in New Guinea and parts of the Solomon Islands, characterized by its dark plumage and bright yellow cere and feet. It is a significant predator in its island forest habitats.
Where to spot
Primary and secondary forests, often in mountainous regions, across New Guinea and parts of the Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain) and the Solomon Islands.
How to spot
Look for its large size, uniform dark brown to blackish plumage, and bright yellow cere and feet. Its flight is powerful, with broad wings and a relatively long tail. Often seen in flight above the forest.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often seen soaring above forest canopy or perched prominently on tall trees.
