The Purple Grenadier is an exceptionally beautiful finch found in East Africa. Males boast dazzling blue-purple plumage, a red bill, and a subtle red flank patch, while females are duller but still attractive.
Where to spot
Widespread in arid and semi-arid scrubland, savannas, and acacia woodlands of East Africa, from Ethiopia to Tanzania.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or in low bushes. The male's intense blue-purple coloration is unmistakable. Listen for its high-pitched, melodic song.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the breeding season when males are more vocal and display.
