Spotted
The Puerto Rican Screech Owl is a small, endemic owl found throughout the island of Puerto Rico. It is well-adapted to a variety of habitats, including urban areas and coffee plantations.
Where to spot
Widespread across Puerto Rico, inhabiting forests, woodlands, coffee plantations, and even suburban gardens and parks.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic 'coo-coo-coo' call, often given repeatedly. Scan tree branches with binoculars or a spotlight, especially near dense foliage, for roosting birds.
When to spot
Active mainly from dusk through the night. Its distinct call makes it easier to locate during these nocturnal hours.
This owl is one of the few owl species that primarily hunts large insects, such as cockroaches and crickets, rather than small mammals, reflecting its adaptation to island ecosystems.
