The Lanceolated Laughingthrush is a medium-sized species named for the distinctive lance-shaped streaks covering its head and body. This social and vocal bird moves in small, active groups through dense undergrowth. It is native to the Himalayas and parts of China.
Where to spot
Found across the Himalayas, northeastern India, Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of southern and central China. It inhabits dense scrub, bamboo thickets, and tall grass in montane forests and open woodlands.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive, often scratchy or chattering calls. Look for groups actively foraging on the ground or in low vegetation. The prominent lanceolate streaks are its most reliable identification feature.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range and observable year-round. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to observe them as they forage. They are particularly vocal during the breeding season.
