The Nepal Barwing is a distinctive babbler found in the eastern Himalayas and parts of Southeast Asia. It is easily recognized by its rufous-brown plumage and the characteristic fine barring on its wings and tail.
Where to spot
Ranges from the eastern Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan, northeastern India) eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. Inhabits dense montane evergreen and mixed forests, particularly in rhododendron and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic calls emanating from the undergrowth. Look for its active movements through dense foliage. The prominent fine barring on its wings and tail is its most reliable identification feature.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Often observed in small groups, sometimes joining mixed-species flocks.
