Spotted
The Plain Pigeon is a large, uniformly grey pigeon found in scattered populations across the Greater Antilles and a few isolated mainland locations. Its name reflects its rather unadorned plumage.
Where to spot
Found in Cuba, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic, Haiti), Puerto Rico, and formerly Florida. Inhabits forests, woodlands, and sometimes coastal areas.
How to spot
Search in dense forests, often near fruiting trees. While generally uniform in color, look for its relatively large size, long tail, and somewhat purplish-grey body. Its voice, a low, mournful cooing, is a key identifier.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings or late afternoons, especially when feeding.
