Spotted
The Giant Coot is an exceptionally large coot found in high-altitude Andean lakes of South America, making it the largest living rail species. It is characterized by its massive size, entirely black plumage, and a large white frontal shield with a red upper margin. This impressive bird dominates its aquatic habitats.
Where to spot
Found in high-altitude Andean lakes (2,500-5,000 m / 8,200-16,400 ft) across Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Inhabits large, often saline or brackish lakes with sparse vegetation.
How to spot
Look for its immense size, which distinguishes it from all other coots. Note the entirely black body and the large white frontal shield with a red line at the top. It often swims in open water and can be seen walking on large floating nests.
When to spot
Year-round resident in its high-altitude habitat. Primarily active during the day.
