The Eurasian Coot is a distinctive waterbird with an entirely black body and a striking white bill and frontal shield. Highly adapted to aquatic life, it is often seen diving for food on open water.
Where to spot
Widespread across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia. Found on a variety of freshwater bodies, including lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers, reservoirs, and coastal lagoons.
How to spot
Its all-black plumage with a stark white bill and frontal shield makes it unmistakable. Look for it diving frequently for food, or aggressively defending its territory. Listen for its sharp, explosive 'kewk' or 'psik' calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in much of its range, with some populations migrating. Can be observed throughout the day, often in large flocks during non-breeding seasons. Breeding season (spring to summer) offers observations of nesting and young.

Unlike many waterbirds, coots have lobed toes, not webbed feet, which help them propel themselves efficiently underwater while swimming and diving, and also allow them to walk on land.
