Spotted
The Papuan Nightjar is a distinctive nightjar species native to New Guinea, identifiable by its unique vocalizations. Like its relatives, it possesses superb camouflage, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its forested surroundings.
Where to spot
Found throughout New Guinea and some adjacent islands, inhabiting forests, forest edges, plantations, and clearings from lowlands to moderate elevations.
How to spot
The best way to observe the Papuan Nightjar is by listening for its calls at night. Spotlighting along forest edges or roads at night can reveal birds in flight or perched on branches.
When to spot
Primarily active during the crepuscular hours of dusk and dawn, and throughout the night, when it hunts flying insects. It roosts quietly during daylight hours.
This species has a characteristic call that sounds like a series of 'chup' notes, often repeated, helping to distinguish it from other nightjars in its range.
