Spotted
A subtly colored cuckoo, the Pearly-breasted Cuckoo is recognized by its pale, slightly pearly-toned breast and long tail. It is a migratory species, spending its breeding season in South America and migrating towards the Amazon basin.
Where to spot
Breeds in southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, migrating to Amazonian Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia for the non-breeding season. Inhabits forest edges, woodlands, and scrub.
How to spot
Look for its greyish-brown upperparts, pale underparts with a slight pearly sheen, and a long tail with white tips. It can be secretive. Listen for its distinctive, often rapid, 'ka-ka-ka-kowlp' calls.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (Austral spring/summer) or during migration. Active during daylight hours.
The Pearly-breasted Cuckoo undertakes an impressive migratory journey between its breeding grounds in the southern Atlantic Forest and its non-breeding grounds in Amazonia.
