Spotted
The New Caledonian Nightjar is a species shrouded in mystery, also endemic to the island for which it's named. Its superb camouflage and nocturnal lifestyle make it one of the more challenging birds to observe in its range.
Where to spot
Exclusively found in New Caledonia, inhabiting various forest types, from dense humid forests to more open woodlands.
How to spot
Observing this nightjar requires patience and often a nocturnal search with a spotlight, carefully sweeping forest edges or clearings. During the day, it's virtually undetectable due to its camouflage unless disturbed.
When to spot
Like other nightjars, it is most active during crepuscular periods (dusk and dawn) and throughout the night, when it hunts flying insects.
This species is often confused with or historically considered a variant of the White-winged Nightjar, highlighting the subtle differences and ongoing study required for these elusive island endemics.
