Spotted
The Papuan Hooded Pitta is a striking ground-dwelling bird found in the forests of New Guinea. It shares the characteristic black hood and green body of other 'Hooded Pittas,' but with distinct regional variations.
Where to spot
Lowland and hill rainforests, typically in areas with dense undergrowth and leaf litter, across the island of New Guinea.
How to spot
Listen for its simple, two-note 'whip-whip' call. Move slowly and quietly through the forest, scanning the undergrowth and forest floor where it forages. Patience is key for this shy bird.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active at dawn and dusk. Vocalizations may increase during the breeding season, offering better detection opportunities.
