Widespread across mainland New Guinea and many surrounding smaller islands, inhabiting tropical rainforests and forest edges.

Observe for their vivid colors; males are entirely green, while females are red with blue on the chest and back. Listen for their loud, distinctive 'chu-weep' calls and squawks.
When to spot
Active all day, but flights to and from feeding grounds or roosts are most common in early morning and late afternoon. They are resident birds.
