Spotted
The Panamanian Tapaculo is a small, elusive bird endemic to specific high-altitude cloud forests. Its plain, dark plumage helps it blend into the shadowy understory.
Where to spot
Confined to humid montane cloud forests and paramo edge habitats in western Panama.
How to spot
Locate this species primarily by its calls, which can be quite loud for its size. Focus on dense, moss-laden undergrowth, especially near ravines or streams, for a chance glimpse as it forages on the ground.
When to spot
Active year-round, with heightened vocal activity during the breeding season, particularly in the early morning.
Like many tapaculos, the Panamanian Tapaculo often vibrates its tail and body vigorously as it calls, a behavior that can sometimes help in spotting it if you are very close.
