The Armenian Gull is a medium-sized gull with a dark mantle and specific bill markings, closely related to the Caspian Gull. It is a migratory species, often forming large flocks outside the breeding season. This gull prefers freshwater habitats for breeding.
Where to spot
Primarily found around the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, and Middle East, especially around large lakes and reservoirs in Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Iran. Winters extend to the eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea.
How to spot
Look for its dark grey mantle, and in adults, a strong black band on the bill near the tip. Observe around large freshwater bodies, often associating with other gull species. Listen for its deep, nasal calls.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season from April to July at their inland lake colonies. Wintering birds can be seen from August to March along coastal areas and major river systems.
