The Papuan Hornbill (also known as Blyth's Hornbill) is a large, striking hornbill widespread across New Guinea and surrounding islands. Males have a glossy black body, a bright yellow or orange gular pouch, and a large, ridged pale bill with a prominent casque.
Where to spot
Found across New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and the Solomon Islands. Inhabits lowland and hill evergreen rainforests.
How to spot
Look for its large size, glossy black body, and the male's distinctive yellow/orange gular pouch and large pale bill. Listen for its loud, deep, grunting or roaring calls, which are a characteristic sound of the New Guinean forest.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day, often seen flying over the canopy or foraging in large fruit trees, typically in pairs or small groups.
