The Painted Stork is a beautiful medium-sized stork found in tropical Asia, known for its vibrant plumage. It features white body feathers with pinkish tertials, black flight feathers, and a striking yellow-orange bill.
Where to spot
Widespread across South and Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asian mainland. Inhabits freshwater wetlands, rice paddies, lakes, and rivers.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive white plumage with pinkish wash, black wings, and yellow-orange bill with a slightly down-curved tip. Often seen wading in shallow water, using its bill to sweep for fish and other aquatic prey. They frequently nest in large colonies.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Breeding often coincides with the end of the wet season or beginning of the dry season.
