Spotted
The Asian Openbill is a distinctive stork found across tropical Asia, known for its unique bill structure where the mandibles gape in the middle. This adaptation is specifically used for handling snails.
Where to spot
Widespread across South and Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka east to Vietnam and parts of Indonesia. Inhabits wetlands, rice paddies, marshes, and flooded areas.
How to spot
Look for its medium size, mostly whitish plumage with dark wings, and most importantly, the characteristic gap in its closed bill. Often seen foraging in shallow water, sometimes in small groups. Its flight is typical of storks, with neck and legs outstretched.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Breeding seasons vary regionally, often coinciding with monsoon rains and peak food availability.
