Spotted by
A large, elegant wading bird with glossy black plumage, a white belly, and a striking red bill and legs. Unlike its more urban cousin, the White Stork, it prefers secluded wetlands and forests for breeding and foraging.
Where to spot
Breeds across a wide range of temperate Eurasia, from Central Europe to Eastern Asia, and also in parts of Southern Africa. Winters mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia.
How to spot
Look for its large size, entirely glossy black body (except for a white belly), and long red bill and legs. Scan quiet rivers, wetlands, and large forests. Often solitary or in small groups, soaring high on thermals.
When to spot
Breeding season from spring to early summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Best observed during migration periods (spring and autumn) at traditional bottlenecks or on breeding grounds.

Black Storks are very shy and secretive birds, often nesting in remote, old-growth forests and feeding in secluded wetlands, making them more challenging to observe than other stork species.
