Spotted
The Saddle-billed Stork is a magnificent and unmistakable large stork native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of the tallest storks, renowned for its striking plumage and uniquely colored bill.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa in a variety of wetland habitats, including swamps, rivers, lakes, and floodplains.
How to spot
Look for its impressive size, contrasting black and white plumage, and unmistakable large, red-and-black bill with a prominent yellow frontal shield. Often seen wading patiently in shallow water, stalking fish and other aquatic prey.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Breeding periods vary by region, often occurring during the dry season when water levels recede, concentrating prey.

Its bill features a prominent yellow 'saddle' or frontal shield, giving it its name and making it one of the most visually distinctive birds in Africa.
