Spotted
The Orange-fronted Yellow Finch is a small, bright yellow finch with a distinctive orange patch on its forehead, found in open, grassy areas of northern South America.
Where to spot
Open grasslands, pastures, and savannas in northern South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, and parts of Brazil, generally below 1,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for the orange patch on the male's forehead. It often forages on the ground in short grass. Listen for its high-pitched, buzzy calls, which often reveal its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best seen during the breeding season when males are most colorful and vocal.
Males display a particularly vibrant orange forehead, which can be quite striking and helps distinguish them from other similar yellow finch species in the field.
