The Carbonated Sierra Finch is a striking, dark-plumaged finch found in specific dry, high-altitude habitats of the Andes. Its name refers to its almost sooty appearance, particularly in males.
Where to spot
Endemic to the dry inter-Andean valleys and scrublands of southern Peru and northern Chile, typically between 2,000 and 3,500 meters.

Look for it in dry, rocky, and shrubby areas. Males are easier to spot due to their darker plumage. Observe their foraging behavior on the ground and listen for their characteristic calls.

Year-round within its range; most active during the morning hours when it is foraging.
Males of this species are particularly striking with their dark, almost black plumage, which contrasts with the lighter, streaky underparts of females, making sexual dimorphism quite evident.
