Found in the Himalayas, including parts of India, Nepal, and Bhutan. It inhabits high-altitude conifer and rhododendron forests, often in dense thickets.

Visible year-round in its resident range, though it may make altitudinal movements in winter. Breeding season is in spring and summer.
