Spotted
Brandt's Mountain Finch is a large, robust mountain finch with a distinctive grey head and breast, contrasting with a streaky brown body. It often shows a yellowish wing patch.
Where to spot
Found in the high mountains of Central Asia, from the Caucasus through the Himalayas to western China. It inhabits alpine tundra, rocky slopes, and glaciers above the tree line.
How to spot
Look for large flocks feeding on seeds on the ground in open alpine areas. The grey head and flight calls are good identification features. They can be quite tame in some areas.
When to spot
Visible year-round in its high-altitude range. More concentrated and visible in flocks during winter months when they may descend slightly.
